The British as rulers
By:Edwin Lee
Published on 1991 by Singapore University Press
This book is about how the British ruled Singapore. Part One deals with situations concerning the indigenous Malay rajas, whose forbears were associated with the British founding of Singapore in 1819. Part Two is concerned with challenges presented by the immigrant, predominantly Chinese, population. Part Three treats the rise of political and national consciousness. It shows how the British and the people under them reacted to events, personalities and ideologies coming out of China, and the Muslim Middle East. The author not only describes events, but also inquires into the assumptions and ideas behind them.
